How To Play Gin Rummy
Each player is dealt 7 cards. The rest of the deck forms the stock, with one card turned
face-up to start the discard pile. Whoever reaches 100 points first wins the game
(highest score wins).
Your Turn
Draw:
Tap the stock to draw a random face-down card, or tap the discard pile to take only its top card.
There's no "buying" further down the discard pile — just the top card, or the stock.
Discard:
Tap a card in your hand to discard it and end your turn. You may not immediately throw back the exact
card you just took from the discard pile.
Melds & Deadwood
Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank.
Run: 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit (Aces are always low).
Deadwood:
Points left over in cards that don't belong to a set or run (Ace = 1, number cards = face value,
J/Q/K = 10 each).
Ending the Hand
Knock:
If, after drawing, you can set one card aside and have 10 or fewer deadwood points left, you may knock
to end the hand. Your opponent can then lay their own unmatched cards off onto your melds before
deadwood is compared. You score the difference between your opponent's deadwood and yours —
unless their deadwood ends up equal to or lower than yours, in which case they undercut
you and score the difference plus a 25-point bonus instead.
Gin:
If you can set one card aside with zero deadwood left, you go Gin — your opponent cannot lay off,
and you score their full deadwood plus a 25-point bonus.
Stock runs out:
If the stock is nearly exhausted and nobody has knocked, the hand is thrown in with no score and a new
hand is dealt.
